Rachael Hoyle
Advanced Apprentice of the Year
Employer – BAE Systems
Learning Provider – Xchanging
Rachael can be seen investigating an engine with a small mirror and torch. We then see her sat next to an aircraft cockpit whilst talking.
Rachael says “I’ve always done well at school, and got good exam results. But when I heard about apprenticeships and the opportunity to gain academic qualifications as well as gaining work base training, and practical knowledge at the same time, I decided that apprenticeships would suit me.” Rachael can be seen climbing into the cockpit “I’ve been very driven and seized all the opportunities that apprenticeships has offered me, and developed myself throughout my apprenticeship.” Rachael and David are stood discussing the technical drawing on the table in front of them “I’m now working toward my Honours degree in chemical engineering.”
Davis is standing in the work area.
David says “Rachael is our shining star at the moment; she’s an example to any young person here in the training area. We all admire what Rachael has achieved.”
We see Rachael and a colleague checking serial numbers on the aircraft against their paperwork.
Rachael says “The skills I’ve gained from my apprenticeship have allowed me to take it out of the work place. I volunteered to go on a scouting project to Uganda, where we visited a remote village and developed a community centre.” Rachael is working with two other young people within the body of an aircraft. “It’s really good for us to see the small contribution that we’ve made to their community, and how grateful they were for the work that we‘d done.”
David says “She has wanted to promote engineering and talk to other young people.”
Rachael can be seen teaching other young people
Rachael says “I’ve been asked to attend a few workshops to encourage women to come into engineering. And perhaps be a role model to these young people.”
David says “If the training centre was full of apprentices like Rachael then it makes staffs work a hell of a lot easier, and a lot more enjoyable.”
